First thing you need to know is that there are a few tap water health risks associated with Sodium Fluoride, which is an inorganic compound and a toxic, hazardous waste byproduct from the aluminum and phosphate fertilizer industries, produced by the reaction of hydrofluoric acid with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide. This compound was commonly used as an insecticide since the 1800’s for cockroach control in the U.S. and used as rat poison up to 1938. In 1915, Sodium Fluoride was then introduced as a means of controlling poultry lice.
It wasn’t until the 1940’s that Sodium Fluoride was then added to the mains water supply which began pumping this highly toxic chemical to households throughout many countries. So is tap water safe if it doesn’t have Sodium Fluoride in it? Well, yes, and no!
There’s more because that’s not the only tap water health risks you need to know about. If you are fortunate enough not to have Sodium Fluoride added to your drinking water this doesn’t mean you have no cause for concern. In much of the world, including the E.U., Chlorine is added to the public water supply. This is common knowledge, however many people may be unaware of the serious health issues which are also associated with exposure to chlorinated water.
Before we can come to an understanding concerning the ill health affects associated with drinking chlorinated water, we must first have an understanding of why chlorine is added to our mains water supply and the chemical transformations it undergoes when it comes into contact with water.
Chlorine has a wide variety of uses domestically and industrially and is widely used to produced plastics, pesticides, to disinfect swimming pools and drinking water and as a preservative to control bacteria and odours in the food industry.
Chlorine is a highly toxic substance and exposure to high enough levels can be fatal. This is the same chlorine that is used to disinfect swimming pools and drinking water, however a common misconception is that chlorine is present in our chlorinated public water supply, which is not exactly the case.
During water chlorination chlorine is added to the water at first, however chlorine is highly unstable and quickly reacts with water and is rapidly broken down to form hypochlorous acid and hypochlorites. These are the chemicals that disinfect both swimming pools and public drinking water. Your drinking water contains an equal balance of hypochlorous acid, hypochlorites and some chlorine.
The World Health Organisation states that “Chlorine is present in most disinfected drinking-water at concentrations of 0.2–1 mg/litre”. But what do these chemicals do to human health when ingested?
It should be made clear that there is no information on the long-term health affects of drinking chlorinated water or ingesting hypochlorite solution for humans. Citing scientific research, The World Health Organisation states that:
“…In rats, hypochlorous acid was readily absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, distribution being highest in the plasma; smaller amounts were found in bone marrow, kidney, testes, lung, skin, duodenum (small intestines), spleen, liver, and bone. In vivo, sodium hypochlorite was metabolized to trichloroethanoic acid, dichloroethanoic acid, chloroform, and dichloroacetonitrile. Hypochlorous acid administered to rats was excreted primarily in the urine and faeces, mostly in the form of chloride ion. None was excreted in expired air.” (1)
Through animal testing, we can logically assume that humans also absorb hypochlorous acid and hypochlorites into our bone marrow, kidneys, testes, lungs, skin, intestines, spleen, liver and bone. The negative health effects of which are certainly not good.
This same previous WHO document also found, in vivo tests, that male mice encountered reproductive problems as a result of being administered drinking water containing chlorine, with sperm-head abnormalities increasing in line with increasing doses of chlorinated water.
This same WHO document does state that “it has been reported that asthma can be triggered by exposure to chlorinated water” and “episodes of dermatitis have also been associated with exposure to chlorine and hypchlorite” in humans.
Additionally, there is equivocal evidence of carcinogenic activity in the lab rats given chlorinated drinking water, however according to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, “the cancer risk to people who drink chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine”.
If we mix science with a little common sense we can see the further potential damage of drinking chlorinated water and what it can do to human health. As previously mentioned, chlorinated water is used in both swimming pools and drinking water to kill off bacteria and it’s this word, ‘bacteria’, which is a vital focal point in understanding the ill health affects associated with drinking chlorinated water.

The first problem with bottled water is before we even get to analyzing the water itself and that problem’s with the plastic containers used to bottle the water. Not only are you paying several thousand percent more for bottle water than necessary, but the plastic often used to make the bottles contain a variety of highly toxic chemicals that are known to easily leach out and contaminate the water they contain. This spells potential disaster for your health.
If you leave your water bottle in a hot car, or reuse it, your exposure is magnified because heat and stress increase the amount of chemicals that leach out from the plastic. So the container your water comes in needs to receive just as much attention as the water itself, and plastic is simply not a wise choice from a health perspective. If possible, natural plastics produced from plant cellulose should be used or glass where appropriate.
The ‘Natural Resources Defense Council’ of the United States conducted a four year detailed investigation into the quality of bottle water. An investigation which involved 50 American states, FDA experts, three leading independent laboratories and the testing of more than 1,000 bottles of water sold under 103 different brand names. The many contaminants they found inside these supposedly pure bottled water was genuinely troubling.
The conclusion of the research conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council was:
“Our limited ‘snapshot’ testing, and that published in a few other recent surveys of bottled water, indicate that most bottled water is of good quality. However, our testing also found that about one fourth of the tested bottled water brands contained microbiological or chemical contaminants in at least some samples at levels sufficiently high to violate enforceable state standards or warning levels. About one fifth of the brands tested exceeded state bottled water microbial guidelines in at least some samples. Overall, while most bottled water appears to be of good quality, it is not necessarily any better than tap water, and vulnerable people or their care providers should not assume that all bottled water is sterile. They must be sure it has been sufficiently protected and treated to ensure safety for those populations.” (2)
Their research found that 1 in 4 bottled waters were contaminated with either:
- Coliform Bacteria (can cause infections with vomiting, diarrhea, or serious illness in children, the elderly, and immune system problems in other vulnerable people)
- Heterotrophic Plate Count Bacteria – (Linked to many illnesses)
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria – (Can cause infections)
- Arsenic – (Known human carcinogen. Also can cause skin, nervous, and reproductive or developmental problems.)
- Nitrate – (Causes ‘blue baby’ syndrome in infants, due to interference with blood’s ability to take up oxygen. Potential cancer risk.)
- Trihalomethanes (i.e., chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform) – (Causes cancer of the bladder, colorectal cancer, and possibly pancreatic cancer. Also concerns about possible birth defects and spontaneous abortions.)
- Phthalate (DEHP) – (Causes cancer; expected to be an endocrine system disruptor.)
In the United Kingdom the case is much the same. The Daily Mail reported in 2006 that (3),
“A Potentially deadly toxin is being absorbed into bottled mineral water from their plastic containers. And the longer the water is stored, the levels of poison increase, research reveals. As the sell-by date on many bottled waters is up to two years, scientists have now called for extensive further studies.
The research by world expert Dr William Shotyk – who has vowed never to drink bottled water again – will be published in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s journal next month. It is sure to revive concerns about the safety of bottled water, the world’s fastest-growing drinks industry, worth £1.2billion a year.
The tests found traces of antimony, a chemical used in the making of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, used by most mineral-water sellers.
Small doses of antimony can make you feel ill and depressed. Larger quantities can cause violent vomiting and even death. The study stressed that amounts of antimony were well below official recommended levels. But it also discovered that the levels almost doubled when the bottles were stored for three months.”
