Taking Responsibility | Take Responsibility for Your Life & Experiences
Welcome to video number 5 in this mini-series where I am discussing the essential qualities of a spiritual person and in this video I’ll be discussing Responsibility, why it’s important to take responsibility for your life and experiences, and why taking responsibility is important for spiritual development.
We exist in a global culture where it’s normal to give away our responsibility by blaming others for our experiences in life.
For example, if an event happens in our lives and we react negatively in response to that event, most people will blame the event as being the cause of that negativity, rather than accepting that it is they themselves that are the cause of that negativity.
Or in other words, if a person expresses a negative state of being in response to an event, such as anger, jealousy, sadness, or frustration, many people will blame the event, or another person, for making them feel that way, rather than taking responsibility for themselves.
So what is wrong with blaming events and other people and not taking responsibility for how we choose to feel?
Well, the answer is hiding in the question.
You Have The Ability to Choose Your Feelings
If we blame events or other people for how we feel, then we psychologically accept that we are not capable of choosing how to feel.
Bypassing responsibility for our feelings over to someone or something else, we program our brain and mind to accept a disempowering belief that we are not capable of choosing how we respond to events and other people.
“It’s not me that’s making me feel bad, it’s that event, and that person.”
When we do that, and we pass responsibility for our feelings over to someone else, we create a victim mentality within ourselves that gives that other person power over our thoughts and feelings.
Events and other people do not control your thoughts and feelings. Only You control your thoughts and feelings.
Take Responsibility for How You Feel
The first step towards taking control over your thoughts and feelings requires that you accept 100% responsibility for how you choose to think and feel.
If you pass blame and responsibility onto events and other people for how you think and feel, you program yourself to believe that you are not on control of your thoughts and feelings.
I mentioned something important in the group video titled ‘Emotions and Feelings Are Different’ which I’ll mention again here because it’s important.
In neuroscience, emotion and feeling are considered to be different. Emotion is considered to be an automatic reaction to external or internal stimuli. Whereas a feeling is how you allow that emotion to continue to affect your mental state.
So it’s normal to experience emotional reactions to people and our environment. That’s a mechanism we use to keep us safe and to help us understand what’s going on around us.
However, we can choose whether or not we choose to respond to that emotion negatively.
And the more we practice training ourselves to control our feelings and responses to our emotions, the less power our emotions hold over us, and the more resilient we become.
So don’t try to control emotion. If you try to block emotion you will block your openness to other energies.
But do control your response to those emotions, or in other words, control how you choose to think and feel in response to your emotions.
Don’t pass responsibility for your thoughts and feelings over to events and other people. Because if you do, you are psychologically accepting that your environment controls you, rather than you having control over yourself.
And it’s especially important for spiritual development that you take responsibility for your life and for how you choose to experience your life.
Taking Responsibility is Required for Advanced Spiritual Development
Spirituality is all about self-awareness. When we reach advanced stages of spiritual development, we are realizing advanced states of self-awareness.
Spirituality is the path of self-awareness and you cannot be aware of yourself if you blame events and other people for the thoughts and feelings that arise from within you.
You create your own thoughts and feelings and to understand how to control those processes, you have to take 100% responsibility for the thoughts and feelings you express.
If you don’t take responsibility for your life and experiences and you don’t take responsibility for your thoughts and feelings, you cannot be fully self-aware you cannot learn what the events in your life are trying to show you, and you cannot objectively observe what is happening in your environment if your environment is controlling you.
So remember, to take ownership of your thoughts and feelings, you have to accept 100% responsibility for being the one who generates those thoughts and feelings.
Pass responsibility for your thoughts and feelings over to someone else, and you pass ownership of your thoughts and feelings over to that person.
One of those decisions will bind you, the other will set you free.
