Laughter is the Best Medicine | Benefits of Laughter Therapy
You may have heard the old saying that laughter is the best medicine, however, this is more than just an old tale, there is hard science which proves laughter is good for you. There are many benefits of laughter therapy for your brain, body, and overall health.
Laughter is the best medicine because it helps to improve your emotional mood and make you feel happier and more joyful.
And that positive state of mind has a direct effect upon your body and healing system in many ways.
There is Abundant Scientific Evidence Showing the Health Benefits of Laughter Therapy
There is plenty of clinical and scientific evidence proving laughter is good for you and has many positive effects on health and well-being, making laughter therapy an effective complementary treatment for many conditions.
So what are the benefits of laughter?
When you look at the science for what laughter can do for your body and your health you’ll probably be amazed.
Not only does laughter make you feel happier and more joyful, but it also:
- Reduces the production of the stress hormone (cortisol) in the body
- It strengthens your immune system by increasing the production of antibodies
- It improves the aerobic capacity of your heart and lungs
- It helps to reduce pain
- Combats depression and anxiety
- And helps you to relax.
The benefits of laughter extend to more serious conditions too, with illnesses such as cancer for example. Including laughter as part of a cancer treatment regime can help improve positive thinking and raise people’s spirits.
And keeping people’s spirits high and maintaining a positive mindset is a vital part of ensuring their healing system works efficiently.
Even Fake Laughing Has Been Proven to Improve Health
If you don’t have a funny bone in your body, and humour is not your thing, there’s no need to worry because it’s been shown that even fake laughing has a positive effect upon us mentally, emotionally, and physically.
You will perhaps have heard of the famous doctor Patch Adams, who used to heal patients using laughter, and today we now have a deeper scientific understanding as to why laughter is the best medicine.
Take stress, for example, this is something many of us experience at one time or another.
Laughter is known to help relax the body and mind by activating the sympathetic nervous system and helping to neutralize the effects of the fight-or-flight response, which is triggered when we experience stress.
When this fight-or-flight response in the body is neutralized it automatically improves the body’s ability to regenerate and self-heal.
Bring Some Laughter into Your Daily Health Routine
Make a point of bringing some laughter and humour into your daily life, watch a funny comedy, or a stand-up comedian for 30 minutes a day and take that time to relax, de-stress, and reinvigorate your body’s healing system.
Whatever it is you find humorous and whatever makes you laugh, bring it into your daily routine and try to add some humour into your life.
Life can be serious business, and we can experience serious conditions that can lead us towards suffering, however, laughter can improve many of these conditions by improving your thought processes, emotions, and feelings, while helping you to take life a little less seriously.
And that can help you deal with what challenges you have to endure with a positive outlook, an optimistic smile, and joy in your heart.
