Being Non-Judgemental | Why Judgemental People are Disadvantaged
One piece of advice you can read in holy books and religious texts is to to be non-judgemental of others or to not pass judgement on others, in other words. But what does being non-judgemental really mean, and why are we advised not to judge people?
In a spiritual sense, spiritual development is all about awareness. And as you advance spiritually you become increasingly aware of the reality around you and the reality within you.
So awareness is one of the most important aspects of spiritual practise because without awareness, you cannot be aware of the messages hiding within your life experiences.
And it’s your life experiences that assist you with your spiritual development.
Why Are Judgemental People Disadvantaged?
The moment you judge a person, you choose to close down and limit your awareness of that person.
The moment you judge anything, whether it’s a person, an event, or anything else, in that moment, you can not be aware of the message being brought to you.
Every person, every relationship, and every event in your life brings with it a message for you to understand and realize.
And when you choose to pass judgement on what’s in front of you, you are not open and receptive to realizing the message being brought to you.
You can not be aware of the message being brought to you because you have chosen to attach a certain thought, idea, or belief to who or what is in front of you which you then accept as truth.
When you pass judgement onto the person in front of you, you create a belief and project that belief onto the person in front of you.
And when you do that, you are not aware of what’s in front of you and what message you’re being brought. Because you are aware only of the projection of your own mind.
Judging others means you only see a reflection of your own thoughts, ideas, and beliefs, rather than what’s actually in front of you.
And that is the complete opposite of awareness. That is ignorance, which in other words, is ‘lacking knowledge or information’.
Your Suffering Brings a Message to You
When it comes to the people who enter your life and trigger your suffering, for example, it’s very easy to get caught up in that suffering and experience it deeply as though it is a part of you.
But of course, suffering is not a part of you. It’s a state of being you choose to express because you are not aware of the message this suffering is bringing you.
The message your suffering is bringing you is an awareness of how suffering is triggered within you.
And if you are aware of how suffering is triggered within you, then you can understand and realize how your own thoughts, ideas, and feelings play a role with those triggers.
You can learn so much from your own suffering, and you can learn so much from every person and experience that comes into your life, whether you label that experience as being good or bad.
But if you’re judgemental of what’s in front of you, you will not understand and realize the message being brought to you. And your most deeply challenging experiences offer you the most valuable messages.
Your Suffering Will Continue Until You Get the Message
It’s also worth remembering, that if there’s a message you need to be given and you don’t reach an awareness of that, this message will continue to be delivered to you until you do understand and realize that message.
It may be delivered to you by a different person, in a different time, a different place, and with a different event, however, it will trigger the same trigger within you that causes that suffering to arise.
So being non-judgemental of what, or who, is in front of you allows you to become aware of your inner self, and how your environment triggers a reaction within you.
And once you have learned how your environment triggers a reaction within you, similar people and events will no longer enter your life and trigger you because you will have learned how to dismantle those triggers.
Because it is the triggers within you that energetically attract these people and events into your life to help you become aware of those triggers.
People will bring you challenges to help you become aware of how your inner self reacts to your environment so you can learn how to resist and dismantle those triggers.
If you can learn to resist being triggered by what’s in your environment you will have succeeded in not allowing your environment to control how you think, feel, and react.
That is mastering yourself. And so being non-judgemental will help give you the awareness you need to master your self, by not allowing people and your environment to influence you.
When you judge something or someone you define it. And when you define something yourself, you cannot be aware of the message it’s bringing to you.
Judging other people is natural, we all do it, and it’s how we recognize dangers and keep ourselves safe.
So in that sense, judging others is wise. Judging others by projecting our own beliefs onto them, however, is not so wise.
So be aware of how your environment, and how you judge other people, can influence how you think, feel, and react. And rather than serve judgement on others, look for the message they are bringing you instead.
Because in that message you will become aware of what’s in front of you while realizing how to master your self.
