Wu Wei | How to Improve Your Life with Wu Wei

Brain hack number 3 will show you how to improve your life using an ancient principle found in Taoism, known as the Wu Wei principle, which helps us to find our flow and ride the wave of chaos guiding us through life.

By incorporating the Wu Wei principle into your life you allow yourself to live a life of peace, harmony, and acceptance while being free from attachment.

What is the Meaning of the Wu Wei Principle

The Wu Wei Principle can be found in Chinese Taoism and this principle is known as the principle of non-doing, non-action, and non-forcing.

The Wu Wei Principle involves choosing not to follow any action that goes against the natural flow of nature.

Similar to how a planet circles the Sun, and water flows down a stream, there is no control or force in the movement of a planet or water.

A planet flows naturally down the channel meant for it. Just as water flows naturally down the channel meant for the water. And both flow effortlessly without resistance.

The message of the Wu Wei Principle is that you too are a part of nature and so your life has a natural flow to it too.

The famous Bruce Lee once remarked upon this same principle spoken of in Wu Wei, when he said:

“Be like water making its way through cracks.
Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it.
If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water.
If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle.
You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot.
Now, water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

We can find the exact same message in the Wu Wei Principle that we find in this deep spiritual quote by Bruce Lee.

The Wu Wei Principle offers you a deep insight into how you can be less resistant to your environment through non-doing, non-action, and non-forcing.

Or as Bruce Lee would put it, “By being non-assertive, non-rigid, and flowing like water.”

Living your life by ‘non-doing, non-action, and non-forcing’, means that you too, like the planets and water, can flow effortlessly through your life free from friction, disturbance and suffering, by learning how to be non-resistant to where the flow of your life is taking you.

Everything in the Universe is energy. You too are energy. And your life can be viewed as being a specific flow of energy.

When you attempt to control everything in your life and you strive to force a path ahead as the natural flow of your life is trying to take you elsewhere, you experience friction, disturbance, and suffering within your mind.

When you let go of having to be in control, however, the root cause of this friction, disturbance, and suffering is no longer present.

At this point, your body and mind finds its natural flow as you effortlessly glide through life with minimal resistance and maximum ease.

At the heart of the Wu Wei Principle is a deeply profound spiritual message.

“You are not here to forge a path in life. You are here to observe where your path is guiding you.”

So be Love, and allow your life and whole being to flow like water.
