DOES REIKI HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS
There are some important things you should be aware of when it comes to understanding repressed trauma and Reiki side effects!
All forms of medicine, healing and therapy can have side effects. However does Reiki have any side effects and are there Reiki side effects that may be unique for particular people?
Yes, there are certainly potential Reiki side effects that one may experience with Reiki if they have a history of past emotional trauma.
These Reiki side effects are nothing negative. However it’s important to be aware of these so you don’t create a negative experience for yourself.
If you have just received a Reiki attunement or a healing session, there are a number of temporary mild symptoms which you may experience.
These are all a natural part of the healing process and are fully explained in my article on The Reiki Cleansing Process.
It will also be a good idea if you understand what Reiki does and how it amplifies and empowers your energy expressions. Which is what I explain in detail in my article on Can Reiki Be Harmful?
Apart from these two previous articles, what are the Reiki side effects you should know about for people with emotional trauma?
POSSIBLE MENTAL & EMOTIONAL SIDE EFFECTS
Does Reiki have any side effects for people with deep rooted trauma? Yes, it can do!
When it comes to Reiki, there are potential Reiki side effects you should be aware of when healing clients with mental and emotional trauma. No matter whether we’re talking about counselling, psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatry, Reiki, or another form of mental and emotional therapy, it’s important to understand how trauma is rooted within a person and how self-healing impacts upon this.
Sigmund Freud, who was a famous Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, developed therapeutic techniques to help heal people from the repressed trauma associated with their past experiences. [Learn More About Sigmund Freud]
And Sigmund Freud’s work and theories remains a core part of psychiatry, psychology and psychotherapy to this day.
The energy of Reiki itself can do no harm to a person. However it’s important for a practitioner, or a client, to understand how Reiki heals and why understanding repressed memories is important.
Reiki helps to heal a person mentally and emotionally. And it does this by bringing deeply rooted negative energies to the surface so they can be released and the person can heal.
As a byproduct of this resurfacing of negative energy, people can sometimes re-experience the trauma and mental and emotional pain they have repressed.
Given the correct approach, this is not a bad thing. This is how any form of mental and emotional therapy works to heal a person. However special care and attention should be given to people who have a past history of deep trauma.
UNDERSTANDING REPRESSED TRAUMA
Understanding repressed trauma and how it can resurface during healing is important!
When an adult or child experiences a traumatic event in their life that is difficult to deal with, a natural defensive mechanism within that person is repression. Understanding repressed trauma is important when it comes to Reiki healing.
People who have experienced trauma will naturally, automatically, and without awareness, repress the thoughts and feelings they experienced during that event within them.
When it’s difficult for a person to mentally and emotionally cope with a traumatic event they have experienced, the mind buries the associated thoughts and feelings deep within them.
This is automatically done as a natural defensive mechanism to remove, or reduce, ones conscious awareness of this past trauma.
Sigmund Freud developed techniques and practices to help heal those with emotional trauma, which often involved encouraging patients to talk about their traumatic experiences. The goal of this therapy allowed a traumatized person to bring their repressed thoughts and feelings into conscious awareness so they could be released and healed.
As a byproduct of this re-surfacing trauma and recovery of repressed memories, the individual can re-experience the negative thoughts and emotions associated with that past trauma.
While this can be an unpleasant experience, this is key to how many mental and emotional therapies work on healing a patient today.
REIKI SIDE EFFECTS WHEN DEALING WITH TRAUMA
Knowing when to get extra help in addition to Reiki!
This re-surfacing of repressed trauma is a natural and normal part of the healing process when it comes to Reiki too.
The energy of Reiki will help to automatically bring repressed energy to the surface of a persons awareness so it can be understood, released and healed.
When it comes to individuals with significant past trauma however, it’s important to be mindful of what a person may experience when these repressed energies re-surface. Whether you’re the client or the practitioner.
Depending upon what sort of trauma is re-surfacing, one may experience:
- …or other negative thoughts and emotions
So does Reiki have any side effects? Yes, for some people it can do!
Personally, I am of the opinion that if a Reiki practitioner is helping a client who has significant repressed trauma, and they are not qualified or experienced in dealing with such things, then Reiki should be used as a complementary therapy alongside another form of professional therapy.
WHEN REIKI CAN BE COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE FOR TRAUMA CLIENTS
Getting a Reiki healing session is sometimes only the beginning of a clients healing journey!
There’s no question that Reiki is helpful and can be a positive therapy for those with repressed trauma. However to be effective, a Reiki practitioner and client needs to properly understand the nature of trauma and how to deal with it when it’s released.
There are Reiki practitioners who will channel energy towards a person during a healing session and conclude that healing session upon finishing.
For clients with significant repressed trauma however, this is often not appropriate. The release of that repressed negative energy during the healing session is only the first part of the healing process.
Helping your client to be consciously aware of why this repressed trauma is resurfacing, and how to deal with it, is a vital part of continuing that healing process.
This is why having a client fill out an information form before their session is important. Even better is to email it to them and ask them to fill it out before they visit you. This way you know what to expect.
If you’re not prepared to deal with people who have significant repressed trauma, it would be advisable to suggest an alternative therapy, or complementary therapy, which your client should consider.
HEALING TAKES TIME SO DON'T RUSH IT
Everyone will have a different healing journey and different energy to release and process during healing!
Personally I’ve seen people who have seemingly miraculous healing’s in a single hour session. However this is not the norm. It will often take people several healing treatments to proper heal what may be bothering them. Whether this is physical, mental or emotional based.
With repressed trauma clients they may require many ongoing Reiki treatments, so it’s important to be aware of this. It could take dozens of treatments and your professional relationship may extend to years.
The important thing is not to rush your clients. Healing is achieved not when you perform healing, but when the client is ready to heal.
There are many factors involved that affect the speed of healing, including:
- How open your client is to Reiki
- What expectations they have of being healed
- Personal beliefs
- The capability of clients to let go
- How willing they are to re-experience their past trauma
- How relaxed and comfortable they are
- …and many other factors
A big part of healing is helping your clients to improve their relationship with themselves and to understand their thoughts and feelings.
So be patient, take your time and don’t rush things. As a Reiki practitioner it’s not your job to cure someone. It’s your job to connect that person with the energy of The Source while giving that person the support they need to heal in their own time.
With love, patience, trust and compassion, you’ll be in the perfect state of body and mind to help your clients heal deeply and effectively.
