Being Aware | Be Aware of Living in the Present Moment
It’s important to be aware of living in the present moment and being aware of what’s happening around you and within you. Being aware helps to keep you centred in the present moment and improves your intuition and sense of direction in life.
We often hear people state that spiritual development is a journey and this is something I’ve said before myself. Spiritual development is taking part in a process of transformation, so in a sense, this can be referred to as a journey.
However, I’ve stopped saying that spiritual development is a journey because it can cause misperception in some people.
When people think of a journey, they think they have to get somewhere. They think that they’re at point ‘A’ and they need to journey to point ‘B’ in order to develop spiritually. And that is not true.
You are already exactly where you need to be, to develop spiritually. And that is right here, right now, in the present moment.
Spiritual development at its core is all about self-awareness
And you don’t need to journey to a certain point or get somewhere in the future to be self-aware. Self-awareness can only happen now, in each present moment.
There’s a famous Zen Buddhist story that illustrates the importance of being present quite nicely that speaks of an eager Zen student, who approached his master and asked:
“If I work very hard and diligent, how long will it take for me to find Zen.”
The Master replied, “Ten years.”
The student then said, “But what if I work very, very hard, and really apply myself to learn fast — How long then ?”
The Master replied, “Twenty years.”
“But, if I really, really work at it. How long then?” the student asked.
“Thirty years,” the Master replied.
“But, I do not understand,” the student said. “Each time I say I will work harder, you say it will take me longer. Why do you say that ?”
And the Master replied, ”When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye on the path.”
Not thinking of spiritual growth as being a journey is really important for this same reason.
When your mind is focused on the future and is focused on getting somewhere, or reaching a future point, or achieving something in the future, you only have one eye on the path.
And what only having one eye on the path means is that you’re not fully aware of the present moment if you’re mind is fixated on achieving a result.
By all means have an idea of what direction you’re travelling, but remain in a state of present awareness now, in each present moment.
There is a wealth of information that is currently flowing to every single one of us
And that information is helping us to self-reflect, to be aware of ourselves and others, and to help guide us intuitively.
There is absolutely no effort required to be open and intuitively aware. To be intuitively aware we must be open and receptive to the information that’s flowing towards us.
And to do that we need to be self-aware in the present moment and in a state of receiving, rather than projecting.
And you’re in an open, receptive, and receiving state of being when your mind is empty, still, and at peace, without being fixated on getting somewhere, or achieving a certain result.
Fixing your mind on such things fills your mind with a busyness, that stops you from being open, receptive, and fully aware in the present moment.
And you can find that stillness within your mind by quietly sitting in meditation, touching your heart and intending to smile to your spiritual heart, while being aware of how you feel in the present moment.
If you do that regularly, your heart opens more, your mind modifies itself less, and your brain becomes less active. And in time and with practise you’re increasingly being aware of nothing but the present moment.
That’s what we want to aim for with meditation, to be in a state of pure awareness without our mental activity clouding our awareness.
And when those mental clouds clear, we can experience the Light clearer.
So remember, you are already exactly where you need to be to be aware of living in the present moment. Here, and now, in this present moment!
All you have to do is touch your heart, smile to your spiritual heart, and be aware of living in the present moment.
